Moonlit Music
Your Voice, Elevated.

Welcome to Moonlit Music, a professional production and mixing studio based in Apex, NC. Led by Mixing Engineer Liam Alexander, we believe every dedicated artist deserves their music to truly shine, to sound better than they could even imagine. Our mission is clear: to elevate your artistry to the highest level of commercial viability, delivering a depth, clarity, and impact you simply won't receive from typical independent engineers. We're here because we don't believe in 'good enough'; we believe excellence is a standard and not a goal.

My Journey: From Obsession to Calling

My path into music engineering was forged by a relentless drive for sonic perfection. For years, I pursued this craft, often driven by the feeling that my own work was never quite good enough. That intensity, though at times agonizing, became a powerful engine for mastering my skills. It taught me something critical: as a quality mixing engineer, I can show artists how truly amazing they can sound, transforming what they perceive as imperfections into unique strengths and identity. For the dedicated artist, this insightful approach becomes your ultimate advantage.

Music isn't just what I do; it's what I am. My mother, a singer and performer, nurtured my love for music from infancy. I grew up listening to her sing, even while she was pregnant with me! My family roots in the Bahamas are steeped in music, from my mom recording an album when I was seven to my uncles still playing gigs today. Countless stories involve me figuring out melodies on our old keyboard, always encouraged to sing and play, and I have many memories of all my cousins huddled around the piano when we gathered at grandma's – music was simply the family language.

As a multi-instrumentalist in bands, we constantly faced the frustration of our own recordings not matching what we heard in our heads. I vividly remember sitting at a mixing console, making a silent promise: I will learn to make music sound truly amazing, no matter what it takes. What began as a delusional attempt to save a buck by mixing my own songs quickly blossomed into an undeniable calling. I became obsessed with making artists sound larger than life (and learned firsthand how much harder that is when the artist is you).

The Unconventional Path to Unrivaled Expertise

My path to mastery wasn't a straight line. Despite excelling as an A student in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, I found myself spending more time "breaking into" the music buildings to play and write. Recognizing where my true passion lay, I took a risk, transferred, and earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Sound Design.

The real transformation came from attending Mix With The Masters with the legendary Chris Lord-Alge. The experience taught me more than just techniques; it broke boundaries and instilled an outlook—an approach to mixing fueled by instinct, creativity, and a fearless commitment to serving the song. There's often a skepticism attached to seminars like Mix with the Masters, as if you paid to meet a celebrity. But to be accepted into the program, you had to apply and audition your work, and I was one of the youngest engineers ever accepted. That pushed me.
Returning to school for my Master’s, I became obsessed with practicing what I'd learned. My now wife and I originally met because we would hang around the sound building and "poach" three-hour studio windows from less dedicated students. The objective: to challenge myself to download, import, and mix any multitracks I could find before the 3 hours ended. This unlocked an ability to instantly zero in on an artist's unique strengths and amplify them.

Never one to waste access, I also leveraged every opportunity to get feedback on these mixes from other incredible professors: Oscar-winning sound editors, recording engineers from the golden age of A&M, and even the former SVP of Post Production at Paramount, Cece Hall. By my second year, I was brought on as a mixing professor's assistant, sharing what I'd learned with junior and senior students.

Where Talent Meets Trust
Trying to mix your own music to save money is a trap more and more artists are falling in to, but the reality is it takes at least a decade of dedicated ear training. Even then, objectivity with your own art is still nearly impossible. You receive significantly more value from having a partner who can finesse your creations and put them on extraordinary display. Continuity in that relationship only makes it more powerful.

The music industry can indeed be a minefield of exploitation. That's why I'm fiercely committed to maintaining a professional environment at Moonlit Music. This isn't just a service; it's a space where you're protected, where you can be unapologetically yourself. My wife is also an audio engineer; while she's heard stories far worse than her own experiences in this industry, she’s a core reason why we ensure all artists are safe with us. Wives, sisters, daughters, sons, brothers--EVERYONE deserves that respect.

Most importantly: I won't just help you craft your best sound. I'll challenge you to think like a mixer and producer, pushing your ability to develop your songs more effectively. You don't need to be a technical expert to understand the ingredients and recipes needed to craft your perfect 'meal,' and many successful artists leverage this understanding to their benefit.

The Moonlit Music Promise: Impact, Not Just Sound

I bring 100% confidence and unwavering commitment to every project. There’s no challenge your song presents that I can’t solve; together, we'll 'crack the code' on your sound. I love that moment when you hear your song and just know, "That's it. That's the sound. That's my sound"—that's what I live for.
